Detail Stair Section Sketches

Stairs #1 - Hazan Motorworks - "Bold"

Stairs #2 - Christian Benner Custom - "Vivid"

[Stair Modelling]

Ramp + Stairs
The idea was the combine a ramp and set of stairs to go around the same way, however I placed the stairs on the outer side of the spine, which would make the travelling for the motorbike going up and down to be very inconvenient. Therefore I separated the two, flipped the ramp and intertwined both of them to make a more interesting effect of spiralling as suggested when motorcycles are ridden.

Stairs hanging from ceiling
This concept was inspired by many images of stairs hanging from the ceiling or walls as shown in the lecture prior to class. I wanted to make an iteration of that idea and emphasised its 'hanging' or elevation through the long thin treads that are tucked away under each other. From here, LED lights may be installed to suggest that they are floating as well.

[Material Choices]
In terms of materials, I chose to use very industrial materials for Hazan Motorwork's stairs and ramp. This resulting with a steel framed spine holding steel treads, and a precast concrete ramp. For Christian Benner, I chose to warm the cold concrete space with timber treads that extends from the base and into the ceiling.

Google Sketchup Modelling - Drafts x 2

Chosen Sketches

[Section Sketch #1]

I created two sketchup models from two of the eighteen sketches I drew. The first sketch as you can see when built in sketchup was quite difficult to produce due to the curves. As a result, I hadn't finished it (as in I only produced the 'above' section of the building) and therefore moved to test out the second sketch.

No 'below' section was modelled up

[Section Sketch #2]

This sketch (below) was the second sketch I chose to develop into a draft model. I found the spaces flowed better in this sketch as well, where I added the floor above in the sketchup model.

Section Sketch 2 - Above: Bold, Below: Vivid

I started off with the 'section' to form the shape which made it easier to extrude and add the details in-between.

[Section Drawings via Illustrator]

As a result, I really liked the form and space the second draft provided, thus making my final decision to add more details. From here, I used Illustrator to get rid of the mistakes and hollow areas which are supposed to be filled (such as the base).
